Nine dead, 54 vehicles consumed in Lagos tanker fire


Disaster struck on Thursday at the Otedola Bridge, Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, after an oil loaded tanker slammed and detonated.

No less than 54 autos and business vehicles driving behind the tanker out and about were said to have been gutted by flame, amid which nine individuals were reported dead.

An observer, Nkechi Obiageli, said the acident happened around 5pm.

She stated, “I was in a business transport heading towards the Mowe region of Ogun State. The transport was adjacent to the tanker.

“There was activity and when it cleared a little, the transport driver moved his way to the front. We were around a couple of vehicles from the tanker, when we heard the sound of a blast.

“The fuel from the tanker spilled on the interstate and every one of the vehicles at its back went up on fire. Individuals kept running for dear life. There was disarray all over the place.”

A transport driver, Sunday Esene, said his vehicle was scorched in the mischance.

He stated, “I had recently dropped off my travelers at Berger transport stop and swung to purchase fuel. I was headed back when I saw the tanker. Out of the blue, it tumbled and hit the middle. When I understood that fuel was spilling out of the tanker, I relinquished my transport and hopped to the opposite side of the street. A couple of moments later, the tanker detonated. A driver, Aderibigbe Oluwafemi, said he got away passing by a bristle as the tanker was before his vehicle.
